This is the Coolest Map of Mars ever created, and with it, future space explorers won’t get lost while exploring the red planet.

You cannot deny it, you would just love to get your hands on this beauty… wouldn’t you? I know that it would certainly look more than cool in a frame on the wall. The map has been produced to a scale of 1 to 4 million and was created by OS cartographic design consultant, Chris Wesson.

The planet Mars has become the latest subject in our long line of iconic OS paper maps. The one-off map, created using NASA open data and made to a 1:4,000,000 scale, is made to see if our style of mapping has potential for future Mars missions. — Ordnance Survey

Ordnance Survey (OS), a mapping agency from the United Kingdom, is well known for creating some of the most incredible maps you’ve ever come across. The company provides mapping products for Governments and companies, and now, for the first time ever, the agency is looking beyond England – and Earth apparently—as they have come up with one of the most detailed maps of Mars… ever.

“We have set out from the start to treat the Mars data no different to how we would treat OS GB data or any other Earth-based geography,” says Wesson. “Even though the principles are the same, the design and the aesthetics of an Earth map differ considerably. The cartographic style is something that is very different to your typical planetary map and is identifiable as an OS map.”

The incredible images posted on their Flickr page were built using data provided by NASA and covers a staggering 3.8 million square miles of the Martian Surface. If you look closer, you’ll notice some nifty little details.

The map’s creator, Chris Wesson, said it was alway the intention to  “treat the Mars data no different to how we would OS GB data or any other Earth-based geographic information or landscape.”

Creating such a detailed map from another planet is in fact, more than a challenge and is unlike any map created on Earth.

“The surface is very bumpy but at such a large scale I had vast expanses of land that appeared flat relative to the craters each of several thousands of meters’ depth, hence the need for different lighting and surface exaggerations,” Wesson explained.

As time goes by, more and more private companies have their eyes set on Mars. SapceX is just one of the many companies who eagerly look towards Mars, hoping to get mankind to the red planet as soon as possible.

OS director of products David Henderson said in a release, “We were asked to map an area of Mars in an OS style because our maps are easy to understand and present a compelling visualization, and because of this we can envisage their usefulness in planning missions and for presenting information about missions to the public.”

Even though we won’t see people walking on Mars anytime soon, a map like this is certainly a nice little step that demonstrates just how serious we are when it comes to Mars. Hopefully, for the sake of space exploration and the survival of the human race (as some scientists have stated), getting to Mars is the next logical step in space exploration and having a map like this will certainly help out future Martian Astronauts.
