How many times have you walked on the beach wondering what lies beneath the sand? How many times have you seen a movie that mentions great treasures that have remained hidden for centuries?
Many of us have fantasized about the possibility of finding a treasure?
The truth is that, although the possibilities are really remote, there are still many treasures that remain hidden from the world, waiting one day to be discovered.
In this article, I take you on a journey as I explore five lost, legendary treasures that have never, ever been found.
The fortune of the Virginia Families
During the North American civil war, the general of the north John Singleton Mosby confiscated a great fortune of wealthy families of the present state of Virginia.
Finding himself cornered by his enemies, Mosby would have given the treasure to a man of his trust who eventually hid it, but the trail is lost in history and the massive treasure remains lost.
The treasure of the Flor Do Mar
The Flor Do Mar was a massive Portuguese carrack. It was the largest sailing ship built in its day.
The Portuguese sailing wonder was returning from the conquest of Malacca, as King Alfonso had ordered the ship to return an unimaginable fortune taken from the King of Siam as a tribute. The ship was unseaworthy, but because it was the pride of the Portuguese Navy, the ship remained in function.
As the ship was returning from Malacca, it was caught in a storm in the Strait of Malacca where it eventually sank in November 1511. No one knows its exact location and the ship and its massive treasure remains hidden, waiting to be found.
The Gold of Atahualpa
When the Inca emperor Atahualpa was captured in Cajamarca by the Spanish conquistador Pizarro, he asked his subjects to collect a large amount of treasure in order to pay for their freedom.
According to the legend, the Spanish eventually rejected the treasure, and the Incas threw the massive treasure into Lake Yanacocha. Other legends suggest the Inca buried the treasure somewhere in a secret mountain cave.
The Tomb of Genghis Khan
It is not a secret that the tombs of great emperors and kings are filled with unimaginable treasure.
For centuries, explorers and archaeologists have tried finding the eternal resting place of the great Mongol emperor.
However, despite numerous searches, the tomb of Genghis Khan, and its potential treasure remain hidden.
The legend suggests that the tomb of Genghis Khan is home to incalculable treasure. Many assume he is buried somewhere close to the Onon River.
The Nazi treasure of Toplitz
After the fall of the Nazis in the Second World War, countless rumors circulated about the fate of the great treasure accumulated during the Nazi rule. The nephew of one German officer claimed that the Nazis sank chests loaded with gold into a lake in Austria.
One of the most-searched-for treasures could rest on the bottom of Lake Toplitz, in Austria, although no evidence of its existence was ever found.
